I was among the thousands of Goldenwest members who were notified last month that my personal Visa card information may have been compromised as a result of making a purchase at Home Depot. More than 56 million credit and debit card customers have been affected by this massive data breach.

One of my favorite quotes is “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” I believe that statement is particularly true when it comes to managing personal and family finances. My wife and I have always strived to live within a budget. Maintaining a healthy financial situation has provided our family with security and peace of mind.

Recently, a well-known local real estate agent contacted me about his client who wanted to purchase a home in the Ogden area. The agent was concerned the potential home buyer wasn’t getting the best financing options presented to him by a different mortgage broker. Like all good Realtors, this agent wanted to ensure his client received honest and fair financing options from a knowledgeable, local mortgage originator.

In July 1847, Brigham Young declared “This is the Right Place” and soon thereafter the Mormon Pioneers settled the territory now known as Utah. Out of necessity, the pioneers had to be self-reliant and depend on each other for survival. They worked together in the spirit of unity to build thriving communities from their meager resources. Many merchants combined their resources to form cooperatives that helped provide goods and services at lower costs to participating members.
